About Us

The name Aikido Nanzan Dojo came from my discussion with Saotome Sensei about the difficulty embodying Aiki priniciple in my Aikido and the formation of a dojo. Nanzan 難産 means, difficult birth or southern mountain. Both these meanings are relevant to our name. The effort required to scale a mountain or give birth reflect the priniciple of shugyo, daily effort and struggle toward growth. The austerity of these concepts are modified by the directive of O'Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba, to train with a joyous heart. The rigorous, persistence, and joyous training in aikido lead to success and growth embodying aiki principle. Thus the meaning of our name: The place of Aikido study with rigor, persistence, and joy that allows one to reach the peak and give birth to our full humanity.

Aikido Nanzan Dojo is currenly housed on the campus of Michigan Technological University, nestled amongst the natural beauty provided by the city of Houghton, Michigan. Instructed under Mark Campbell-Olszewski, 5th Dan Aikidoka, who has been training in Aikido for over 30 years. Aikido Nanzan is affiliated with The Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU).
